Hello,
AlmaLinux is a great project, but it doesn’t support x86-64-v1, as Debian does. Leaving owners of the old hardware with no choice, especially users of CentOS 7, who couldn’t move to CentOS 8 before due to newer hardware requirements.
I’m proposing to do a rebuild of packages for AlmaLinux 10 to support x86-64-v1. The idea is to provide people, who use old systems for one reason or another, a choice to run the newest AlmaLinux.
The Alma team had done a rebuild for x86-64-v2 already, so x86-64-v1 should be no issue.
I’m ready to help with the effort.
I tried to propose this for Rocky Linux, but I expect opposition from the leaders — there were no reply to my arguments in the thread: Run Rocky10 on x86_64-v2, x86_64-v1 initiative - AltArch - Rocky Linux Forum
Regards,
Bohdan Khomutskyi.
Hi Bohdan! I’m so sorry to see you didn’t get a reply here yet. This sort of proposal should be submitted to the ALESCo github here: GitHub - AlmaLinux/ALESCo
I know there were specific users who requested v2 support, which is why it happened for us. It was also discussed pretty heavily, and ultimately decided, that EPEL was really required to make the v2 build usable in any large scale way, which meant that they ultimately also decided to rebuild all of EPEL for v2 to accompany the AlmaLinux build for v2. We’re always in for supporting our community, but I’ve been discouraging a lot of doing something “just because it’s cool” when it’s something this potentially big.
If you don’t mind including this information in your proposal as well:
-
Do you know of any specific users that are looking for v1 support? And if there are, how would we get in contact with them if/when we get the v1 version built?
-
How long would you like to see AlmaLinux provide a v1 build?
Hello @bennyVasquez ,
I really appreciate the community effort to have x86-64-v2 supported.
Do you know of any specific users that are looking for v1 support? And if there are, how would we get in contact with them if/when we get the v1 version built?
No, I don’t know such users myself. This is primarily from marketing perspective — to be on par with Debian — providing users a choice to run Enterprise Linux on very old hardware. This may be a path forward to upgrade from CentOS 7.
How long would you like to see AlmaLinux provide a v1 build?
For the entire lifecycle of AlmaLinux 10.
The idea is to put to good use the old Core 2 Duo systems, which are still fine for light desktop use after Windows 10 EOL.
I will submit a proposal, and will see if it moves forward — it is a good opportunity for Alma to standout from RHEL. I’m ready to help with this change.
