Best way to serve downloadable files from an almalinux server?

I’m setting up a small website on an AlmaLinux server and I’m wondering what the recommended approach is for serving downloadable files. For example, if a website needs to let users download files, would you normally serve them directly through Nginx, use a separate storage location, or configure something like object storage? I’m mainly interested in keeping the setup simple while avoiding unnecessary load on the web server. Are there any permissions, caching, or security settings I should pay particular attention to when allowing public downloads?

For a small site, serving static download files directly with Nginx is probably the simplest solution. Nginx is very efficient at serving static files, so the load is usually minimal.

If the amount of data or download traffic is expected to grow, I would consider moving the files to S3-compatible object storage such as MinIO or another object storage service, possibly with a CDN in front of it.

Nextcloud is also an option if you need file management, sharing, or user access control, but it may be more than you need for simple public downloads.

For security, keep the download directory non-writable by the web server, disable directory listing unless required, and set appropriate caching and MIME-type headers. For a small site, serving static download files directly with Nginx is probably the simplest solution.
