Repeated tests in Fedora 43 server and AlmaLinux 10 reveal the following. Using a static IP 192.168.122.x and leaving mask blank has some ‘unusual’ results. Normal mask config is 192.168.122.x/24. AlmaLinux applies a default /24 after reboot if the mask value in NMTUI is unpopulated. Fedora also does this.
However, Red Hat Linux 10 docs say RHEL should default to /32 if NMTUI mask left empty. “If you do not specify a subnet mask, NetworkManager sets a /32 subnet mask for IPv4 addresses and /64 for IPv6 addresses.”
Question: Is this by design? Does RHEL 10 actually do this? Why do Alma, Fedora and RHEL differ? I am exploring possible root causes of reports of ‘peculiar’ exam failures on the RHCSA allegedly linked to NMTUI.
Thank you.
