(Background: I’ve worked extensively with Rocky 8 in the past, but Rocky 9
won’t run on my old hardware because RHEL 9 requires x86_64-v3 processors.)
I’ve noted with interest Almalinux recent efforts to support older processors, but I’m
unclear on the exact status of those developments.
With Almalinux 10 it is clear, because there are separate .iso’s available for v2 processors.
From a Firefox browser, using the Google search engine, the AI overview responses
to the title question currently are as follows:
-for n = 5 or n < 5, the answer is No.
-for n = 6, the answer is Yes. In the Almalinux 9.6 release notes, I didn’t find any
specific reference to the question.
I downloaded a copy of the latest Almalinux-9.6-minimal .iso and loaded it onto a DVD
with K3b.
-when I tried to install it onto my Compaq Presario which has an NVIDIA 650 GeForce
graphics card which originally used NVIDIA 304.137 drivers, the install aborted
immediately with a kernel panic.
-I then tried to install it onto my HP DC5700 which has an Intel graphics card, and the
install aborted with an uncompression error, which apparently in some cases is caused
by a compatibility issue with the OpenZFS module.
Do some v1 processors work, and others not ??
I hope a definitive answer to the question is available.
