Mailing list dead?

hi,

i’m subscribed to announce@lists.almalinux.org but i didn’t get anything after february 24th anymore. so i figured unsubscribing and then subscribing again might help but sending a mail to announce-leave@lists.almalinux.org had no effect either. if i try to subscribe again i get “Member already subscribed”.
then i tried to sign up at

https://lists.almalinux.org/accounts/signup/?next=/mailman3/lists/announce.lists.almalinux.org/

which worked but the confirmation mail never arrived.

i’m subscribed to a bunch of other (non-alma) lists and they all work fine. any info or help would be welcome!

Sounds like their email system came out bad. Probably got hacked or AlmaLinux didn’t keep up with payments or maintenance.
Do you have a filter set up by chance?

none.
(stupid 20 chars minimum)

Interesting. The sign up mail isn’t coming through to a temp mail from https://mail.gw.
It takes multiple seconds to have a connection with its SMTP server, maybe it is being DDoSed or DoSed, and the connections are just timing out.
What email service are you using?
https://guerrillamail.com isn’t recieving it either.
https://sendtestemail.com shows this:

Date:
Mar 24 18:45:09

Email To:
announce-subscribe@lists.almalinux.org

Relay:
lists.almalinux.org[44.218.132.46]:25

Connection Set-up Time:
6.6s

Send Time:
0.16s

Delivery Status Notification:
5.7.1

Status:
bounced

Email ID:
d94e9d95c6cadab10a3c02f0392cd4cf

right now from here it’s fine. also some smtp servers have a delay on purpose.

anyway, as mentioned, everything was fine until february 24th. maybe somebody from the alma team can shed a light on this.

Can you PM me your email address so I can check logs on our side?

it’s the one i used for my account here.

Same here. I hadn’t received any announcement emails in a while, but I just got the following one:

Your subscription has been disabled on the announce@lists.almalinux.org mailing list
because it has received a number of bounces indicating that there may
be a problem delivering messages to . You may want to
check with your mail administrator for more help.

I also reviewed the email log, and there were no connection attempts from your server. There are also no issues with other mailing lists.

Thanks, all. We’re thinking this is a problem with the way we’re filtering for spam. Our infra team is looking into it.

I made some tweaks on March 26 and mail has been flowing normally out of the mailing lists since then.

tl;dr we had some spammers attempting to do some reflection-type spam through the mailing lists. Our filters caught it, but they also blocked all outbound mail from the lists in the interim. We’ve added some additional security measures to prevent the attempted spammers from getting as far as they were and resumed normal mailing.
