Migration to almalinux

Hello everyone,

A few years ago, I used CentOS 7 and 8 as my workstation. Since support for these versions is coming to an end, I’ve been looking for a new distribution to switch to.

The issue I’m facing is that my configuration includes an “MPT SAS 2008.” I just realized that AlmaLinux supports it.

I’d like to use this distribution for my workstation, but I have a few questions:

  1. If I plan to use software like Autodesk Maya, Nuke, or DaVinci Resolve, do I need to install proprietary graphics drivers? I’m using an Nvidia GeForce RTX 3060.
  2. I remember that when using DaVinci Resolve on CentOS, I had to decode my videos to get sound because MP4s are proprietary to Nvidia, or something like that. Is that still the case?

Thank you in advance,
Zosso

Hi. For the first question the answer is yes. To ensure that the full potential of the GPU can be used, the proprietary Nvidia driver is required. I can’t say anything about the second question. I would trying it out because a lot of progress has been done since version 8. For instance the current Kernel version is 5.14 in AlmaLinux 9.4.
