Hello,
Just started with Alma on my laptop and liking it, thanks! I’m just wondering if anyone who had installed either of Zoom or Slack on to this version, what was the cleanest method?
Slack have rpms for el8 and Zoom has an rpm, but this pulls in a lot of X dependencies, which, I think, are superfluous on a Wayland system. I want to avoid snaps if at all possible,
If you have GNOME you likely have Flatpak installed, just add the Flathub repo if you haven’t already.
There’s unofficial Slack & Zoom apps there.
But the RPMs are a more secure way to use the apps. But use the Flatpaks if you really want a pure Wayland experience.
Wayland has “xwayland” subsystem for running X11-applications, because all programs are not expected to port&rebuild to Wayland natives overnight. Hence some amount of X11 libs is “justified”.
Early Covid era I had Zoom on Wayland. Whole Gnome froze at some point. Could have been Nouveau or whatever. X11 sessions did not show that issue. With NVidia’s proprietary drivers the Wayland has been off the table. Not sure whether I have tried Zoom+Wayland again later, but I might have and it might have frozen again. So yes, there might be issues. (Some say that code of Zoom is not the cleanest possible …)
